ASHRAM - VANPRASTHASHRAM : AN ABODE FOR ANCHORITES

Sir M. Monier - Williams in Sanskrit - English Dictionary (Oxford University Press, London, 1899) defines Vanprasthashram as a "stage in the life of a Brahmin of which there are four corresponding to four different periods or conditions, viz., 1. Brahmcharin (student of the Ved), 2. Grihastha (householder), 3. Vanprashta, anchorite and 4. Sanyasin, abandoner of all worldly concerns or sometimes Bhikshu "religious beggar".

In Indian culture, a person in his life must perform four fold objectives of his existance viz.,

  1. discharge of duty - right action
  2. acquisition of wealth
  3. gratification of desire and
  4. final emancipation.

After having performed the duties of procreation and wealth earning he must enter into the third stage of Vanprasthashram where he should work for his own emancipation and also for the good of society to which he owes debt of his sustenance in a selfless manner. After having observed all worldly duties, one should relinquish and detach oneself while living in family and in society to serve the community and strive to look into the philosophy of life : who am I ? what is the ultimate purpose of this creation ? and how can I obtain the sublime bliss ? Attainment of mental peace through soul searching becomes the essential component of a fuller and richer life beyond bondages during advanced years of life. It is, infact, the path of realisation of the role of spirituality in daily life - enabling man manifest the divinity in him.
